There's no denying that Scotland is a stunning country, with a rich history, rugged coastline and jagged mountain peaks. Every year thousands of people from around the world travel to Scotland to explore its wild, unkempt wilderness. As a Scot myself, it's easy to under appreciate the vast charm and beauty our country has to offer tourists from places like Japan, with its colourful cherry blossoms and volcanic mountains, or Australians with their white sandy tropical beaches, or North Americans and their incredible scenery.

A wedding is a perfect time to honour our Scottish heritage and traditions, and it's especially exciting for family &amp; friends travelling further a-field who maybe have never experienced the chaos of an Orcadian Strip the Willow. So here are some ideas to kick start your Scottish Wedding Planning and capture the magic that has bewitched the world.

<h3>Scottish Ceremony Ideas</h3>

Everybody has heard the phrase "Tying the Knot", but did you know of it's Scottish origins? Back in ye olde times, when a couple were marrying, they would signify their union by tying two pieces of fabric together. This tradition endures to this day, with couples choosing fabrics that have a special sentiment to their families, culture or personalities. The 2 pieces of fabric symbolise the union of both families - so that's why each partner often chooses a fabric that represents themselves or their family. This can be tartan, a favourite colour, an old family heirloom or something made specifically for the couple.

Fancy a drink during your wedding ceremony? The ancient Quaich is an important part of Scottish Culture, and also makes your spouse-to-be hasn't poisoned you! At least that's the original idea, sharing a cup ensured that no Clan could assassinate their neighbour during a feast. So naturally, it's become an integral part of a traditional Scottish wedding. Couples can keep things strictly Scottish with their favourite whisky, but many choose a modern twist - opting for a botanical gin, fine rum or even (and I wouldn't recommend this) a Pornstar Martini and Espresso Martini combo.

Another favourite amongst Scottish couples is the oathing stone. Originating from the ancient celtic tradition to "set an oath in stone", couples place their hands over the stone whilst reciting their vows. This can be deeply personal and the stone then serves as a reminder of the commitment they made to each other. You can choose to hunt for your favourite rock whilst on a walk, or even buy personalised oathing stones from suppliers if you wanted something more fancy.

When you think of a Scottish wedding, it's hard to imagine it being kilt-less. In fact, as a Scottish wedding photographer myself, I find it strange when I have a groom turn up in a tuxedo. When it comes to Kilts, there's quite the choice. There are different family or geographic tartans, and you could also choose to go full traditional and have it fitted like a true Highlander, or go for the more formal style paired with a jacket.
&nbsp;
Just remember to warn your photographer if you go full Scotsman!
&nbsp;
You could also opt for the Trews look, which is a little bit different but still in keeping with Scottish traditions.

<h3>Scottish Wedding Venues</h3>

If you want a true Scottish wedding experience, then choosing your wedding venue is going to be top of your agenda. Modern hotel weddings often don't have the character that an ancient castle has. One of the truly great things about marrying in Scotland, is that you can literally get married anywhere. There's no limit on location - so if you want to marry halfway up your favourite hill in the snow, then there's nothing stopping you - except maybe a few grumbling guests and the occasional horde of midges.

Scottish Castles are perfect places for weddings. Thankfully, we have no shortage of them. Not all castles are the same though - as many have been modernised inside, such as Carlowrie Castle, and some are indeed still partially ruins - such as Neidpath Castle (complete with dungeon and definitely-not-haunted well). It's important to remember that older castles were originally fortresses, so natural light and big open windows are not common features.

Glencoe is one of the most iconic elopement locations in Scotland. It's definitely a favourite for me. As well as being rich in history, it's a stunning landscape that encapsulates the wilderness of the Scottish Highlands perfectly. There's plenty of paths leading to little private areas for your ceremony - just watch out for hidden bogs and bring a good pair of hiking boots if you want to venture further a-field.

Don't forget Scotland's beaches are also beautiful locations for your wedding ceremony. The West Coast has some of the best beaches, with gorgeous white sands and warm(ish) water in the summertime. Woodland weddings are also a firm favourite, and with the ancient trees of the Caledonian Forest towering above you as you exchange your vows, you'll truly have the Outlander experience.

<h3>Little Scottish Touches</h3>

Scottish Wedding Ideas

No matter how many months or years in advance you've got to plan your wedding, if you're not organised and approaching it as a team it's inevitably going to become stressful. Managing opinionated family members and friends is also super challenging - so trust

What was your favourite memory from your wedding day?

"We wanted to do a dance for the big day but my wedding dress wasn&rsquo;t really suited for dancing. I might have had a reception dress for the dancing portion if I could do it all over again. Especially for us girls dreaming of being a Disney princess in a pretty dress with a train..."

"Caspian would have given us a little more time to prep in the morning - they felt quite stressed and rushed while getting ready (which is pretty common for them!). Otherwise everything went exactly as we hoped!"

"Wouldn't change a thing ❤️"

Planning your wedding is a daunting task, and when you've only been to a few weddings as a guest, understanding what's involved and accounting for all the little details can seem overwhelming. How do you know if you found the right wedding venue? Will it feel rushed on the day?
&nbsp;
Who better to ask than couples who have gone through their very own wedding planning journey! So get a cup of tea and read through the experiences of some of my favourite couples from last year - Rachel &amp; David, Freddie &amp; Caspian, Calynn &amp; Johan, Rosie &amp; John and Ann &amp; Jamie.

<h3>The Wedding Venue: How did you know you'd found "The One?"</h3>

Ann &amp; Jamie chose Arniston House for their August wedding near Edinburgh.
&nbsp;
"It was the first venue we'd viewed and we both loved it immediately. We liked the grounds, the green space and the ceremony space in the Orangery. We viewed one other venue just to be absolutely sure this was "the one" and we were. We'd toyed with a city centre venue but ultimately felt we wanted a more "rural" venue with lots of green space around..."

"We did tours of three venues, all around the same area (where Caspian grew up). We saw two on the first day, and while both were lovely, we each had a favourite - and they didn't match! We saw the third venue the next day and both loved it immediately. We stepped out of the car and saw the grounds, and it was love at first sight..."

Caspian &amp; Freddie fell in love with the Glentanar Ballroom near Aboyne in Aberdeenshire for their spring wedding.

"Loved the Signet Library's beauty. Perfect location for us. Blown away by architecture, pillars, stained glass windows. Knew we'd get amazing service and our guests would be well looked after..."

Rosie &amp; John married had a truly Edinburgh wedding, marrying in the heart of the Royal Mile. Their ceremony took place at St Giles' Cathedral followed by a luxury reception at The Signet Library.

Finding your venue is definitely one of the most challenging part of planning your wedding. It sets the tone for everything else that follows, from your wedding styling to the atmosphere that your guests experience. Listen to your gut throughout the wedding venue hunt - both when something feels right, and when it feels wrong. Make sure that you are united in what you are looking for in a venue - does it need to be rustic, have flexibility for bringing your own vendors, on-site accommodation?
&nbsp;
Pro Tip - choose a Wild Card venue to visit. It's great to see something that's in contrast to another venue that you love - you'll either fall more in love with your favoured venue, or it'll open your mind to even more possibilities.

<h3>The Wedding Planning: What did you find the most challenging?</h3>

"All of it was hard!!!! We had an initial budget which we quickly realised we were going to go over but deciding how much we were willing to go over by was the tricky part- we'd agreed some things we wouldn't compromise on and we'd pay the price for that if need be (ie photographer!). As our wedding required us to pick our own vendors (pros &amp; cons to it!), I remember trying not to get overwhelmed by all the possible choices and being decisive and certain we'd picked the right people once we'd made our decision to book them. Our venue had a list of preferred vendors already which narrowed things down but scrolling through Instagram was useful too especially for photography, florists and hair and make up I think as these things are better seen visually. Also trying to make sure we'd not missed booking anything and running down the list repeatedly: caterers, celebrant, photographer, band etc etc..."
&nbsp;
Ann &amp; Jamie had a blank canvas for their wedding at Arniston House, but they pulled it altogether on top of their busy lives as doctors, as well as moving house and arranging for family to fly over from halfway round the world in Malaysia.

"Guest List and sticking to a budget. Also I thought that the whole wedding process brought about so many emotions good and bad as it makes you really think about everything in more depth..."

Rachel &amp; David mastered the wedding planning experience for their special day at Dundas Castle. Their wedding party played an important role in their planning process, accompanying them on the journey up from Cambridgeshire for a venue visit and occasionally joining our pre-wedding planning calls.

"The hardest part was sifting through what was actually important to us, rather than what was just expected or traditional. There were some things that we did because they were important to family members, but we saved a lot of time, money, and stress by just saying no!"

Freddie &amp; Caspian's wedding was guided by their personalities - with their love for books, films &amp; TV series a central theme for their wedding styling and decor.

<h3>Best Wedding Planning Tip</h3>

Every couple will find different aspects of wedding planning challenging. Working as a team and keeping focus on yourselves and what you want will go a long way to keeping the planning aspect fresh and close to your hearts. Choose a day to plan your wedding together, divide tasks between each other and when things get overwhelming, take a minute to pause and reflect.

"I think remembering the entire point of the day is a big thing. In the greater scheme of things, the day isn&rsquo;t about having a specific type of flower on the tables or what nail colour the bridesmaids have. The day is about love and the commitment you&rsquo;re making. The rest is extra details and not worth the stress and meltdown when something goes wrong. Because something will go wrong - nothing is perfect. But it honestly doesn&rsquo;t matter..."
&nbsp;
Calynn &amp; Johan's wedding at Drumtochty Castle truly did feel like a perfect day, and I suspect that their relaxed attitude and focus on their love for each other played a huge part in that. Planning their wedding from South Africa added an extra complication to their wedding planning journey, but their love for each other was always their priority.

"Be very organised, ask for help, make sure you make it true to you as a couple and not be influenced by others or social media, have good people around you who fight your corner, enjoy every moment as it goes so quickly..."

Great advice from Rachel &amp; David. In today's modern age of social media, it can be so easy to feel like you need to compete against others for the perfect wedding, whether it's following trends, copying celebrities or overspending to match the look &amp; feel of an Instagram post you once saw.

"Enjoy it. Treat your appointments as mini-celebrations. Especially the menu and wine-tasting..."

Rosie &amp; John's advice is spot on. Wedding planning can quickly fade from excitement to extra work, so it's important to keep that excitement alive and enjoy your wedding planning journey together.

No matter how many months or years in advance you are planning your wedding, it can easily go from being an excitable part of your week to a chore you'll want to ignore. The best way to avoid your wedding planning journey turning into a stress-fest is to be as organised as possible, work as a team to delegate tasks between yourselves, don't be afraid to ask for help, and even designate a dedicated date for wedding planning.

<h3>Wedding Photography: What one image were you most keen to get?</h3>

For Calynn &amp; Johan, their priority was their first kiss.
&nbsp;
"Our first kiss after being pronounced as married. That was a symbolic and important moment to have captured without anyone else in the shot but us starting this journey together..."
&nbsp;
A First Kiss is an essential shot for me and it's something that I plan for when I'm photographing ceremonies. You can't have a first kiss photo from just any angle, so consider what's going to be in the background of your first kiss shot. A flower arch, moongate or mantelpiece topped with flowers or candles are favoured by many couples.
&nbsp;
&nbsp;

For romantics Caspian &amp; Freddie, their couples portraits were something they were looking forward to:
&nbsp;
"We both were most excited about the couples portraits - we really wanted a beautiful vibrant photo of us both to capture the day (and Stephanie delivered in spades!). Individually, Freddie really wanted an extended family photo, as his family are scattered around the world and don't all come together very often. Caspian specifically wanted a first look with both sets of parents, to share a moment just with them on the day..."

To me, couples portraits are not something to skip or want to keep to a minimum. This is your wedding day, and you'll want to capture that excitement, love and romance in your gallery. It's also important to consider what family photos are important to you, as occasions where all the family are together can be rare. Never underestimate how important a first look between you and your parents is on your wedding day - it's an emotionally charged moment that's deeply personal and unrepeatable.

<h3>Wedding Photography: Top tips for beating those nerves for camera shy couples?</h3>

"We were very nervous as a couple who never takes pictures of ourselves. What really helped was building a relationship with our amazing photographer. Having meetings and engagement shoots help build comfort and confidence in who is handling the camera on the big day. Other than that, be present with your love, enjoy being with them and the romantic pictures will come..."

It's so important to be yourselves in front of your wedding photographer. When you act naturally, you'll have more of a connection to your photos when you look back through your gallery.

"We were a little nervous, but more excited! Part of that was choosing the right photographer and having a chat with Stephanie beforehand - she really put us at ease. Our one piece of advice would be to 'just say yes' - if your photographer suggests a shot, trust their expertise and go with it! Some of our favourite photos were spontaneous ideas because of the way the light was falling, or something in the environment that inspired a pose..."

Spontaneity plays a huge part in couples photos during your wedding day. As a photographer, I'm learning about your personalities throughout the day, understanding what compositions and posing styles might work, figuring out your limits and boundaries all while reading the light and environment to capture the best images for your.

<h3>Wedding Photography: Expectation vs Reality</h3>

"I was surprised at all the shots Steph managed to take without us noticing she was there, I think they're some of the best ones in our gallery. The ones of us laughing during our ceremony and during our speeches and our first dance. The magic does happen behind the scenes sometimes!"

My approach at Ann &amp; Jamie's wedding is the same for all my weddings - to blend into the background and not be a distraction, but also to allow everyone around me to feel relaxed and at ease through my fun &amp; positive personality.

"We were surprised at how unobtrusive the photography was! For the couples portraits and the candids, we were able to just enjoy our day and do what we wanted while Stephanie worked her magic..."

"We were afraid it would take a longer time and detract from time with our guests. It was so much quicker and seamlessly integrated than we expected..."

"Stephanie listened to our suggestions and ensured we got plenty of time to spend with our guests. She was great at keeping our day and group photos on schedule..."

<h3>Time Travel: What piece of advice would you give your past self about your wedding day?</h3>

"Things truly do work out in the end. All the little hiccups or things that don't go exactly to plan honestly don't matter, none of your guests would have realised really and just savour every moment of the day as it goes by so so quickly..."
&nbsp;

"Remember it doesn't matter what colour your napkins are. Don't sweat the small stuff..."

"Everything will be amazing, don&rsquo;t put too much pressure on spending time with every single person it&rsquo;s a lot in one day, enjoy every moment and when eating or seated - make sure you take in with your new spouse all the guests that have travelled to see you get married. It&rsquo;s a very surreal moment..."

<h3>What was your favourite part of your wedding day?</h3>

For Calynn &amp; Johan, their favourite memory was their personalised wedding ceremony outside Drumtochty Castle:
&nbsp;
"My favourite part of the day was the ceremony. A close friend of ours facilitated the ceremony so it was incredibly personal and unique to us. Beyond that we laughed so much that it really was such a happy moment."

For Ann &amp; Jamie, morning prep &amp; couple time were some of the stand-out memories of their day
&nbsp;
"Hair And make up in the morning with the girls, the break for taking couple shots as it gave us some breathing space amidst the wonderful madness, the meal!"

Caspian &amp; Freddie loved their evening reception with their fantastic friendship group:

"The dancing! Our band (The Apollos) were fantastic, and seeing everyone learn to ceilidh dance was hilarious and wonderful."

For Rosie &amp; John, their nuptials and commitment to each other was their most memorable part of their day:

<h3>Wedding Hindsight: Would you change anything about your day?</h3>

There are things you can do to prepare for your wedding day where you can avoid feeling rushed or regretting something on the day. Plan for everything to take a little longer than you expect, practice elements of your day before hand such as walking down the aisle, dip kisses, dancing in your shoes.

<h3>Favourite Wedding Photo</h3>

Choosing your favourite wedding photo was probably a cruel question to ask my wonderful couples, but the results were so much fun to see.

It was a crisp day in March 2023 when Emma and Austin, chose to tie the knot at the scenic Cornhill Castle. It's remote location was part of the Castle's charm, with its beautiful views of the rolling hills and rushing river. Though it was far from Emma's childhood home in California, it was symbolic of the country she nows call home: Scotland. It was in Scotland that their love story was born, of a walk in the local woods near Stirling as their first date - a first date with an insant love that brought them to their wedding day a few short years later.
&nbsp;
Their theme was nothing short of magical - a Midsommer's Night's Dream blended perfectly with fantasy elements of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It was vision that truly came into being, with Cornhill Castle bedecked in vibrant florals, cosy candlit setting and a wedding dress to match that beautiful fantasy style.

Morning Prep &amp; Getting Ready Shots
&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The epic tunes from the bridal suite could be heard from the top landing, and as I opened the door to the Dunrobin Suite, my eyes were met with a whole lot of Californian energy. All the bridesmaids were up dancing, mimosas in one hand, matching dressing gowns and sunglasses. It was electric, infectiously happy. Emma was dancing as much as she could, sitting getting her hair done, while her mum Dorothea was nervously counting the minutes down until her daughter became a bride.
&nbsp;
As ever, I started with details shots - including an extremely sentimental and old handwritten note from Emma's late grandmother, as well as her handkerchief as her something old. To this day, it remains one of my favourite shots of 2023, combining something old, something borrowed and something blue in the same composition.
&nbsp;
&nbsp;

Austin and his groomsmen were getting ready down in one of the lodges to the back of Cornhill Castle. Far from the high energy of the bridesmaids, Austin and his friends were relaxed if maybe a little nervous for the day ahead. We took a wonder around the grounds to get some informal shots of Austin and his friends before I returned to the bridal suite. At the request of Emma &amp; Austin, a special moment of the day wasn't captured on camera, but it was a lovely moment worth mentioning. Emma and Austin wanted to have a private moment together, where they could receipt their own vows without seeing each other. Emma's wedding planner, Anna, helped arrange that moment, ensuring neither could see other before the big reveal in the pavillion later. Instead, they were placed on either side of a corner, eyes closed, and allowed to reach around to hold each other's hands. As much as I would have loved to have captured this moment for them, I loved the idea that this was one part of the day that was truly private, and is remembered solely by them.

The Epic Dress Reveal

With the ceremony fast approaching, it was time for the bridal suite to be cleared and for Emma to step into her dress. As Emma wanted to do a dress reveal with both her father and her bridesmaids, everyone but her mum and wedding planner left. It was a big moment as her mum helped her with her buttons, and jewellery. Outside, I'd arranged for her Dad, Lee, to wait for his daughter. From meeting Lee earlier that year during a venue visit, I knew this was going to be an emotionally charged scene - and he did not disappoint, bursting into tears the second he saw his beautiful daughter.
&nbsp;
Allowing them a few moments together, I then squirreled Emma away so that I could arrange her bridesmaids on the steps, facing the mirror, for the next big dress reveal. That Californian energy rose to the occasion, with screams of joy and awe. Like father, like daughter - Emma's sister also promptly burst into tears.

The Wedding Ceremony
&nbsp;
The ceremony itself was like a wildflower meadow in full bloom. As the bridal party arrived, Austin's waited for his bride nervously at the top of the aisle - and the wait was so, so worth it.
&nbsp;
It was a beautiful and romantic ceremony, celebrating everything that make Emma &amp; Austin such a unique and wonderful couple. There was a candlelighting ceremony, with both parents invited to each light a candle before Emma &amp; Austin lit theirs - a symbol of their bright, burning love for each other. As a surprise to guests, their rings were going to be delivered in a very magical way! And who better to deliver their wedding rings than Bilbo the Owl, who swooped dramatically down the aisle. He even gave Austin a little "beak kiss" as congratulations.

The floral arrangement in Cornhill Castle's pavillion was truly amazing, and the perfect backdrop to their first kiss photos.

Drinks Reception, Group Photos and Couples Portraits

Immediately after the ceremony, everyone gathered at the fountain for whole guest group photo - I especially loved the pose that Emma's parents made!

During the drinks reception, Emma &amp; Austin took a little time out to themselves to enjoy those first few minutes of being married together. When your wedding day flies by, it's so important to spend some time together as just the two of you - and it was lovely for Emma &amp; Austin to spend these few minutes together, grabbing a first bite to eat now that their nerves had settled.
&nbsp;
Meanwhile their guests were mingling in the reception area enjoying Owl pets and catching up over old times. The sun was piercing through the low cloud at the far end of the valley by the time we got out for group photos and couples portraits. The beautiful scenery at Cornhill Castle made for the perfect backdrop to Emma &amp; Austin's first couple photos together as husband &amp; wife. We had also arranged to do a private first dance with Emma's wedding dress, as she was going to be changing into another one after the meal. With everyone still chatting away on the other side of the castle, we took a few moments for a quick shuffle and a twirl in Cornhill's entrance lobby, with its huge ornate windows.

The Evening Reception &amp; Speeches
&nbsp;
And if owls weren't already enough of a surprise, what Emma had planned for her dining room wedding styling was just above and beyond what she could have dreamed of. Gorgeous velvet table cloths that glistened in the candlelight, beautiful floral arrangements towering over each table - which were aptly named after their favourite flowers. The flower arch from their ceremony now featured at their sweetheart top table. It's little wonder that jaws were dropping when the curtains were pulled back and the guests were invited to their seats.

There wasn't a dry eye in the room once the speeches were done - with the best man and maid of honour delivering the laughs, and mother of the groom and father of the bride bringing in the sentimentality &amp; emotion.

Once the meal was over, and twilight had set in, I headed outside with Emma &amp; Austin for some sparkler shots. We decided to do 2 sets of sparklers, one privately with just Emma &amp; Austin at twilight, and then a second set with their wedding party once darkness had set in. Both sets of sparkler images have a very different and unique feel to them. After the sparklers, their wedding party headed in while Emma &amp; Austin stayed behind for some romantic backlit photos. It just happened to rain for a split second as they held the umbrella over their heads - with the rain illumiated by my flash setup. It made for such an atmospheric and completely unplanned shot.

Cake Cutting, First Dance &amp; Ceilidh
&nbsp;
We headed back inside to cut their gorgeous 3 tier cake before Emma &amp; Austin's first dance. It was such a romantic moment, and Emma's new dress sparkled in the soft evening lighting. It was important to Emma to also include a father-daughter dance. Her dad once again burst into tears and the emotion on his face in these photos is truly some of my favourite candid images from their wedding.

And with that, the formalities and traditions of the day were passed and the ceilidh &amp; party began. Everyone was having an epic time on the dancefloor, with dresses and kilts flying around, sunglasses once again out and everyone throwing out their best moves.

There is something undeniably romantic about a Scottish autumn wedding. The season, with its rich palette of reds, oranges and golds, already paints a beautiful backdrop for any celebration of love. As the leaves turn and the air begins to cool, Scotland's breathtaking landscapes become more enchanting, providing a unique setting for an unforgettable wedding day. Imagine the majestic Scottish Highlands, nestled under a canopy of autumn leaves, their fiery hues reflecting off the mirrored surfaces of the lochs. Or the historic castles, their stone walls echoing with centuries of folklore, standing tall against the vibrant autumn foliage. This is the backdrop for a Scottish autumn wedding, a setting so rich in beauty and tradition that it feels like a fairy tale.

There's a reason it's my favourite season for weddings, with the golden light that comes from the equinox and the darker nights setting in, it combines the best of the summer months where you can expect outdoor drinks receptions in walled gardens &amp; courtyards, and the warm &amp; cosy atmosphere of firepits, sparklers &amp; candlelit dinners. Scotland is truly at its finest in the autumn months, and it's becoming more popular for engaged couples are choosing to celebrate at this time of year.
 The weather during autumn in Scotland may be a bit fickle, but this simply adds to the charm. There's a certain beauty in the uncertainty, a thrill in the possibility of a sudden rainshower, followed by the emergence of a rainbow. Brides often opt for luxurious wraps or elegant tartan shawls to keep the chill at bay, adding a touch of Scottish heritage to their wedding attire. The wedding venues in Scotland are as varied as the mesmerizing landscapes. Couples can choose from a plethora of stunning locations; from grand castles and elegant manor houses to rustic barns and charming country inns. Many of these venues offer breathtaking views of the autumn scenery, creating a perfect setting for wedding photographs that will be treasured for a lifetime.

When you're planning your autumn wedding in Scotland, there are a few things you'll want to be aware of when choosing your wedding date.

1. Sunsets
&nbsp;
If you're choosing a September wedding, it's useful to know the sunset times as they vary substantially from the 1st to the 30th owing to the Equinox and the change in the position the sun sets at as it approaches and moves away from this point. At the beginning of September we lose roughly 2 mins of daylight a day, but as we approach the Equinox it's 3. That's a pattern that applies to the Vernal Equinoxes and both Solstices too (if you thought Calculus was a waste of your time in Maths Class, think again!)

All of this means between the 1st and 30th September we lose about 1hr 16 minutes of daylight, compared with around 40 minutes from the 1st to the 31st July. It's similar between 1st and 31st October, at around 1hr 15 minutes. That might not be a deal breaker, but if you have your heart set on golden hour sunset couples portraits you may find it lands right in the middle of your wedding meal. As your photographer, I'm more than happy to dash out between the main &amp; dessert to get some of these gorgeous photos for you - we only need a few minutes to capture magic. Though it does have it's drawbacks - and can mean interrupting a conversation you're having at your top table, or even just taking you away from the atmosphere of your dining setup. I'll always check with your venue's staff how far through your meal you are, and I'll never interrupt you mid-meal unless you've specifically requested I do so for photos.

If you're booking me as your wedding photography, the sunset times for your wedding date is one of the first things that I research as to me this is a critical part of my planning process and can influence whether or not we do things like sparklers or backlit portraits in the time you've hired me for.

Colour Changes
&nbsp;
Every year nature puts on quite a show with its vibrant colour transformation as the leaves change from deepest forest greens to crimson, burnt orange &amp; mustard yellows. No doubt if you're booking an autumn wedding, then that's the vibe you are looking for in your wedding photography. However, when autumn arrives can vary from year to year. If we've had a particularly dry summer or even droughts, we can have an early Autumn - with the leaves changing as soon as late August. On the contrary, if we get a super wet summer with lots of torrential rain, it can delay Autumn often well into October. It can be really heartbreaking if your date falls too early or too late for the glorious colours, and while there are no guarantees in nature, if your heart is set on those autumn colours you may want to opt for a date around early to mid October.

My editing style is based on a warm colour profile, which means we can still capture the atmosphere of an autumn wedding while keeping your edited images realistic &amp; true to life. Wedding photographers who have a colder edit, centred around blue &amp; green tones, may not deliver the kind of cosy-vibes you are hoping for - so that's worth bearing in mind when you are <a href="https://www.sgmarkphotography.com/posts/choosing-your-wedding-photographer">choosing your photographer</a>.

Weather &amp; Temperature Changes

Whilst it doesn't occur every year, September frequently enjoys a period of warmth and is often one of the driest months (especially in Edinburgh) of the year. So if you're after an outdoor wedding or even just taking advantage of the gorgeous grounds in your wedding venue for couples photos, then you'll most likely be lucky with the weather. However, as we head into October and November you can expect the weather to get a little stormy and it's possible to have Yellow or Amber weather warnings on or before your wedding day. These may impact your guests getting to the wedding venue - such as trains being cancelled or delayed, or even road closures due to falling trees. While storms are wonderful additions to that cosy, Autumnal vibe, they can greatly affect your wedding day - from not having an outdoor ceremony to whether or not it's safe to step out for couples photos. If it's a bit of rain or a tad windy, then I'm all for heading out and getting a little wet - but if you're not too adventurous or would prefer your hairstyle wasn't completely blown out by the wind, you may prefer to keep things indoors or to stick with a month that has calmer weather.
&nbsp;

Despite everything, Autumn will remain my favourite time of year for weddings &amp; photography in general. Whether it's the gorgeous display of colours, the beautiful soft day lighting or the amazing sunsets we get and those darker evenings, it all adds up to a cosy, warming vibe that you really can't get at any other time of year.

Finding the right photographer to capture your day is just as important as finding the right wedding venue to celebrate your love. If your dream wedding is a cosy, rustic barn with fairy lights, you won't be booking the swish upmarket &amp; modern hotel in town, will you?

Booking the right photographer is about more than just finding the someone within your price range who has availability.
&nbsp;
When you are spending one of the most important days of your life with someone, you want to make sure that you are going to be happy and comfortable around them.
Finding a photographer who is on your level is so incredibly important - not just for making you feel relaxed and at ease, but for bringing out your personality. When you are uncomfortable around someone, you may feel closed off, unable to fully embrace the emotion of the moment or cannot immerse yourself completely in your day.
&nbsp;
So while you may love a photographer for their style, price or packages, meet with them over a coffee, call or a video chat and really ask yourself "Can I be myself with this person?"
If the answer is no, then even if that photographer delivers the best images in the world, you may find yourself a little bit alienated from your own wedding photographs. &nbsp; &nbsp;

<h3>Understanding Wedding Photography Style</h3>

A photographer is just like any other artist. They've honed their skill over the years, and have processes and practices in place that work best for them. They'll also have a style that they prefer - this may be reportage, documentary style, photojournalistic, fine art, candid, traditional or relaxed &amp; natural. That's a lot of word salad right there if you aren't clued up on the different styles available.
&nbsp;
There's no right or wrong way to capture a wedding - well, unless all the photos are blurred and key shots are missed, but that's another story. When you are hiring a photographer for your wedding, it's really important to understand their style and accept that.
&nbsp;
A photographer's style is really part of their identity, and makes their work unique and personal.
&nbsp;
So if you are looking for a long list of group shots and want to provide a full itinerary for the photographer to strictly follow, then maybe a natural, candid photographer isn't quite for you. Equally, someone who is a natural light photographer isn't likely to want to produce the in-vogue direct flash style images you may have seen on Instagram recently. It's not that these photographers will refuse these requests on principal - instead, think about what their specialism is and you can also ask them directly about what they think on the trend or style you are looking for. A wedding photographer may also make some stylistic choices in-camera that influence the look &amp; feel of the images - such as depth of field. Professional photographers use premium lenses that add a more luxurious finish to photos, while other cheaper lenses may lead to your images looking a little flat.

Some things to consider: what's their approach to photographing candid images? Will your couples portrait time take up a huge portion of your drinks reception? How will they photograph the key moments of the day - your ceremony, the speeches and the dancing? Do they have a flexible approach throughout the day? Do they work to a specific shot list that you provide, or do they take a more creative &amp; personal approach to capturing your day? Do they offer a service that covers a specific number of hours or is their coverage based on events, e.g. getting ready to the first 3 dances only?

While all photographers are essentially doing the same thing - taking photos of your wedding, I like to use the following analogy to help my couples explain the differences between wedding photography specialisms:

Would you hire a guitarist for your wedding and then make them play piano? It's all music after all, so what's the difference? The guitarist might get away with bashing out a few good notes, but wouldn't you just rather hire the pianist?

<h3>Wedding Photography Editing Style</h3>

This one's closely tied in with photography style, but while the former section is more about how a photographer shoots their weddings, this one is more about the final end stage product.
&nbsp;
As a photographer, an editing style does evolve over time - it's a creative endeavour after all, and there's always something new to play with. Our tastes do also change over time, and those chocolate coloured contrasty elopements may one day be the thing of Instagram-Past.

Your photographers portfolio should be updated with their latest images - and this should be a reflection of the style they currently edit in. While some photographers may offer each couple a selection of editing styles to choose from, be sure to check that this is a service they provide before your book.
&nbsp;
Many photographers have a signature style that they tweak over the years so if you are looking for those aforementioned glorious dark chocolatey styles you've seen in Glencoe but found a photographer whose portfolio is beautiful but is full of light and airy images then maybe you'll need to continue your search. Some photographers may relish in taking on a new editing challenge, so it may also be worth asking them in your enquiry or dropping them a DM on their socials. Either way, don't go ahead and book your photographer and assume that they'll edit in whatever style you suggest.

It's also worth learning what style suits you and your day. As a photographer, I follow others in the industry both locally and around the world. There are a lot of talented people out there and I can love their work and editing style - but I won't necessarily want that for my own wedding day.
&nbsp;
Ask yourself what will suit your day and your venue. If you've chosen a really colourful wedding venue such as the Royal Botanic Gardens or Newhall Estate, then would you want an editing style that loses a lot of that colour &amp; warmth?
&nbsp;
It's also worth understanding what the editing process involves - will the photographer significantly alter your appearance, remove distracting objects as standard, or will there be an additional charge for this service?

<h3>Trust Your Wedding Photographer</h3>

Placing trust in your photographer isn't about whether or not they'll turn up on the correct day or not take blurry photos of all the key moments. It's about an implicit understanding between both the couple and the photographer about how the day will be captured.
&nbsp;
When you are hiring an experienced photographer, understand that this won't be their first rodeo. As much as they'll want to understand the timeline of your day and any unique events or activities you'll be planning, trust that they'll know how to capture that in the best way possible even if it's something that is a little different from the traditional wedding day.
An experienced photographer will always be one step ahead of you on the day, and will think and plan how and where they are going to be throughout each stage of the day.
So when you have that first chat with your potential photographer, always ask them what their process is for the day. If their answer doesn't fit within your vision of how you'd like your day to run, then maybe they aren't the right photographer for you.
&nbsp;
If you are unsure of what your own vision might be - speak to a few photographers to learn which style &amp; approach you'd prefer. You may want a photographer that's completely hands-off and just roams around in the background offering no guidance or direction, or you may indeed prefer someone who throws themselves into your party to grab the moments that matter to you, or perhaps someone like myself who is in between and knows when to take a step back and let the magic happen.

Whatever approach you prefer, make sure any photographer you hire matches that vision.
&nbsp;
Placing trust in your photographer is one of the most important things you can do - from the way they shoot your wedding through to the final edit and delivery stage. By chatting with them during the pre-booking process you'll have a chance to evaluate whether they understand completely your vision for the day. If you think there's a disconnect, then you may want to continue your search and save yourself a lot of stress on both sides.

As a photographer, I want to deliver my very best to every couple - and if I don't feel that I'm the right fit for your day, please understand if I decline your request to book. It's in your best interest, trust me!

<h3>Can You Be Yourselves?</h3>

You're not spending the rest of your life with your photographer (you've found that special person already), but you should ask yourself can I spend a day with them?
&nbsp;
Unlike any other supplier you hire, photographers are arguably going to be spending the most time with you - with videographers coming in a close second. I'm with my couples from around 11am through to 9pm at night usually - that's a lot of time to spend with someone you barely know. I'll be there when you step into your dress, when your mum and dad burst into tears of joy at seeing you in your outfit for the very first time. When you are kissing your new spouse and being intimate during couples portraits, you'll want to have someone who doesn't intimidate your or make you feel like you can't be yourselves.
&nbsp;
Some photographers will have a more extrovert presence in the room, some more introvert - and some, like me, are in between. You'll want to hire a photographer who is going to match your energy. My style is to be there amongst the action, chipping in with ideas when needed, laughing at the jokes - and throwing some in myself - as well as offering guidance and support to anyone who needs it. My approach puts everyone at ease and enables them to relax around me as they would a friend - and means they become less and less aware of me as the day progresses.

Each photographer is different, and you may prefer a more hands-off approach, where your photographer is neither seen nor heard. If you are unsure of how a photographer might be on the day - have a chat with them. Even just a 10 minute chat over Zoom or the phone can give you enough insight into their personality and how they deal with a wedding day.

<h3>Are They Familiar With Your Wedding Venue?</h3>
&nbsp;
Is it always advantageous for your photographer to have worked at your venue before? Yes and no. Some photographers will have their venue shot list and location spots all planned out and many will get reused again and again for each wedding. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but don't underestimate how exciting a new venue is for a photographer. It's a chance to flex their creative skills, try new things and explore compositions from a fresh perspective.
&nbsp;
As a wedding photographer, I always strive to create unique images for my couples, even at the wedding venues I'm working 5-6 times a year but I relish the idea of a new venue. So while you may be tempted to go for a photographer who knows the venue very well, don't be put off by one who isn't familiar with it as this may lead to an explosion of creative magic that truly make your images unique.

And remember, all new venues I cover get a free venue visit where I meet up with your events coordinator to run through how they manage your day, scout for shot locations and assess lighting so I'm totally prepared for the challenge ahead.

Your Wedding Photography Budget

By no means would I ever encourage you to spend more money than you can afford on your dream photographer. A wedding day should always be about celebration, rather than putting yourself into debt over a party. However, if you've got a set budget and the wedding photographer you really want is over that limit, instead of feeling that this person is out of reach consider reviewing the budget in another way. Unlike catering or flowers, your wedding photography gallery is going to be around for decades to come. Rather than thinking about your wedding photography being a cost, it's useful to think about it as an investment. If the difference between your perfect wedding photographer - someone whose style you like and who you'll feel comfortable around - is &pound;300 higher than your budget, then consider that an investment in the quality of your images. If you are going to feel more comfortable around a certain photographer, then you'll have a deeper connection to those images than if you are feeling nervous or anxious in front of the camera. The quality and value of a wedding photographer is subjective, so one couple may value the services higher than another - but it should be about how you feel about them.

Another way to look at it is over the course of your married life. If you really wanted a photographer who was &pound;300 more expensive, then that's just an additional &pound;30 per year of expense by the time you celebrate your 10th wedding anniversary. Having wedding images to cherish for decades to come is why you are investing in a professional wedding photographer to begin with - so if you feel you can spare &pound;30 a year over the next 10 years to invest in a gallery that you can look back with love and affection, then maybe expanding your photography budget is something to consider.
